RAM TYPE MILLING HEAD


CNC retrofitting of huge knee type milling machines has a major bottleneck in getting an accurate and rigid ram type milling head with extra long feed traverse. We have developed a self-powered and self-feeding ram type milling head, having 1000 mm stroke. Mounted on a knee type milling machine, a ram type milling head will provide an extremely rigid and precise Y axis capability for accurate milling, drilling and boring operations.

The sleek ram, in combination with a detachable right angle head, permits machining of the inner walls of the housings which have narrow openings.

The square, box type ram of the milling head has many advantages over cylindrical shaped quill mechanism of the conventional milling heads. It needs the least clearance between the sliding surfaces for the linear movement, thus ensuring a tight fit and the maximum rigidity. Inherently, the square sliding surfaces have extremely large contact area with the housing, thus ensuring maximum rigidity and the least vibrations during traverse and heavy material removal.

The large overhang of the ISO-50 spindle is rigidly supported by pre-loaded multiple taper roller & end supporting ball bearings in the accurately finished bore of the ram housing. The clearance between the sliding ram and the carriage housing is kept at the least minimum with the help of four taper jibs. The ram traverse is enabled with the help of an independent feed unit consisting of a ball lead screw, box nut, gear box and 2 HP AC motor or 11N Servo motor. The spindle receives it’s high torque drive from a well proven, case hardened gear system and a 10 HP motor. Hand scraped turkite linings on the female sliding surfaces and case hardened and ground guideway strips on the male sliding surfaces ensure a very high level of wear-resistance and extra smooth traverse movement. While spindle bearings are lubricated for life, an automatic lubrication system keep lubricating all sliding and rotating parts of the unit.

The spindle measures a run out within 10 microns on it’s face, ID & OD. The linear movement of the ram is within 10 microns over 300 mm length.

The price of this unit is Rs 1200,000, ex-our works, Bangalore. Depending upon the spindle taper, feed traverse length, mounting flange dimensions, sophistication required the prices will vary.
